To the art of the trade

Pertaining to the art of the trade -- One of the major appeals of the hobby community that we all know and love so well, is the not-so-commonly-used term Trade Value. So being that this is a note concerning what we do here at Sports Bursa, during the early development stages of our now new and improved business model, my previous blog famously argued that the flip in our line of work was that people could make, marginally, the profit derived from flipping cards. And, the point of this argument was that everyone can make a profitable margin if they offered cash on top of the trade. Here is one such story: -

I have now bought the NBA Hoops Jayson Tatum RC appraised at a PSA 10 three times by now, mostly because I saw good trade opportunity and of course, because I love this particular card so much. I love them white borders… oh, so classic!!

Purchasing it for the first time at a roughly, at the time, market value of RM350.00 left me with very little room to trade. Never mind, would be the postpending reaction to the purchase. I later traded this card for a Zion Williamson NBA Debut Fast Break PSA 9, roughly valued at RM250 at the time. So naturally, being as I like to believe that I practice what preach I took a cash top up of RM100 to make the deal more, well even… I would later sell the Zion for RM150.00, losing RM100.00 during the course of this action.

So… take two, I purchase the second Jayson Tatum for RM375.00 this time with shipping included. So now, I am down RM475.00 but with the Tatum still in my possession. This roughly means that I would need to flip this Tatum for the same RM475 to make my RM350.00 profit. For the most part I am still down by RM125.00 based on the most available comp for the Tatum PSA 10. What do I do now?

I sell the Tatum to break even at RM375.00 leave me still with RM100.00 in deficit. The next move is what saved me… hold on to your hats, `cause this is what I did next. I purchase a copy of the Tatum off e bay for roughly RM270.00 plus shipping, making the total to be RM300.00, and finally I found someone desperately in need of the 3rd Tatum RC (it is a very popular card here in KL) … I sell the succeeding card for RM400.00 finally making my flip for this card at an even RM0.00, what’s the point you may ask, well what I do makes people happy, and being as this is part of the hobby we love so much, well, I passed a lot time doing all this. Well, I am happy… aren’t you?

Here is to the hobby we love so much. CHEERS!!
